The mangrove of Sundarbans is a unique habitat for many plant and animal species, it is then very important for the biodiversity.
This vast area of 140,000 hectares is a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
It is home to many animal and plant species, but its most emblematic animal is the beautiful bengal tiger , unfortunately threatened by extinction. At present there are less than 2000 specimens in the wild in India.
The mangrove is a natural barrier to erosion and protects the coastline by helping to regain ground on the sea, it is a unique phenomenon, because everywhere else the sea levels are rising as a direct result of global warming and the melting of glaciers.
It is a plant barrier that acts as a buffer between the sea and the land and limits the consequences of the weather.
Whicih is why we protect the 5 million inhabitants of the Sundarbans in case of storms, cyclones or tsunamis.
Trees take in CO2 and thus directly involved in the fight against global warming.
The mangrove is also the first source of economic development for coastal populations: fish, fruit, wood, honey ...
Many of the people in this region live below the poverty line, and 85% depend on agriculture for survival. Aquaculture, honey harvesting, timber production are the main other local activities. degradation of forest resources greatly impacts people struggling to meet their basic needs.
This reforestation project is managed locally by Mass Education, an Indian NGO which fights against poverty through education for nearly 40 years. Planted trees provide fruit, heating and wood construction, help restore soil and curb land salinization ...
Another action of Mass Education, equally important, is to educate the villagers and school children on site to the challenges of the tree and the forest so that they become the first defenders.
Villagers manage nurseries, planting on their land and enjoy the fruits of their labor . They are actors in their own development.
Planted trees are monitored during the first two years by Mass Educaction .
